Wanting Community When Life Is Already Full

A full calendar can include very little time to feel connected. I think about the difference between being around people and having room for an honest conversation, especially when everyone seems to be moving from one thing to the next.

Community building interests me because connection takes more than putting people in the same room. The welcome matters, the way people listen matters, and there needs to be space for different personalities. I want gatheringsto make room for the person who enjoys talking and the person who takes longer to feel comfortable.

I also think belonging can take time. Familiar faces may help, and a shared interest can give a conversation somewhere to begin. A person may enjoy a gathering without feeling close to anyone yet, and that experience deserves room too.

My understanding of community includes choice. People have different needs for company, privacy, and participation, and I would not want belonging to become another expectation to meet.

As I reflect on the spaces I want to help create, I keep coming back to a simple hope: that people can be welcome as they are, with room for connection to develop at a pace that feels comfortable.

A Few Questions I Am Often Asked

What kinds of community events do you host?

Donation-based and low-cost gatherings at the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona, including sound meditations, drum circles, and conscious conversation events. Upcoming dates are on the events page

Do I need to know anyone before I come?

Not at all. Many people arrive on their own. Familiar faces can grow over a few visits, and there is room to take part at whatever pace feels comfortable.

Why does belonging matter for health?

Researchers have connected social connection with better health, and the U.S. Surgeon Generalhas called it a public health priority. I see the same thing in ordinary rooms: people settle when they feel welcome.

I hope you come out to our events sometime. You can check our calendar
