What Happens When a Room Listens Together

Something changes when a group of people listens to the same sound at the same time. I notice it every time I host a group sound meditation. The room settles in a way that is hard to describe, and it does not require anyone to say a word.

Most of us spend our days in conversation, on screens, or both. Listening together is different. There is nothing to respond to, no opinion to form, and no one waiting for your answer. The sound holds everyone's attention, and each person gets to have their own experience inside a shared one.

I also think there is something meaningful about resting near other people. We do not often give ourselves permission to be still in a room full of others. A group sound meditation makes that possible without asking anyone to perform, share, or explain themselves.

People arrive with different reasons. Some are curious, some are tired, and some are looking for a pause they cannot seem to find on their own. All of those reasons are welcome. I do not believe there is a correct way to experience the sound.

As I reflect on these gatherings, I keep coming back to how simple the ingredients are. A room, some time, and a reason to listen together. I want to keep making space for that.

What is a group sound meditation like?

You get comfortable, usually lying down or seated, while singing bowls and other instruments play. There is nothing to memorize and nothing to keep up with. You simply rest and listen while the sound fills the room.

Do I need any experience with meditation?

None at all. A group sound meditation is one of the easiest ways to begin, because the sound gives your attention somewhere to rest. If you are curious about what research says about meditation, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health offers a careful overview.

Where are group sound meditations held?

I host them at the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona. Upcoming dates are always listed on my events page.
