What a First Coaching Conversation Is Like
People sometimes arrive at a first coaching conversation braced for something. They expect to be analyzed, advised, or told what to fix. I want to set that expectation down right away. A first conversation with me is mostly listening.
We talk about what is on your mind and what you want. That sounds simple, and it is rare to have a full hour for exactly that. I ask questions that help you hear yourself more clearly, and we notice together what keeps coming up.
I do not bring a formula. Every person carries a different history, different pressures, and a different picture of what a good life looks like. My job in a first conversation is to understand your picture, not to hand you mine.
By the end, we usually name one or two next steps that fit your actual life. Small ones count. I care much more about a step you will really take than a plan that looks impressive on paper.
As I reflect on these first conversations, I am always struck by how much changes when a person feels genuinely heard. That is where I want to begin, every time. If you are curious, a personal development session is exactly this kind of conversation.
What actually happens in a first coaching session?
We talk for about an hour about what you want and what is in the way. I ask questions, you think out loud, and by the end we name a next step that fits your real life. There is no pressure to commit to anything beyond that.
Is coaching the same as therapy?
No. Coaching is a forward-looking partnership focused on what you want next, and the International Coaching Federation describes it as a partnership that inspires a person to maximize their potential. It is not a replacement for therapy or mental health care, and I will always say so.
Where do coaching sessions happen?
Coaching sessions are virtual and one hour long, so you can join from anywhere. I am based in Phoenix, Arizona, and I also offer in-person sound and energy work for people who are local.
