Why Community Spaces Matter to Me

Community building matters to me because I believe people need places where connection is possible. I am interested in gatherings that leave room for conversation, shared interests, and the simple experience of spending time with other people.

I think a welcoming space takes attention. The invitation matters, and so does what happens when someone arrives. Clear information, respect for personal boundaries, and room for different ways of participating can make a gathering easier to approach.

I also want to leave room for community to look different from one person to another. Some people enjoy a lively group, while others feel more comfortable in a smaller conversation. A shared activity can be a helpful beginning, and there can still be plenty of room for individual preferences.

My understanding of community includes care for the people making the gathering possible too. Hosting, preparing, and following through all take time. I think it is worth acknowledging that work while continuing to ask what makes a space welcoming.

As I reflect on why this matters to me, I come back to the possibility of making connection a little easier. I want to keep exploring what people value in a gathering and how community spaces can make room for those needs.

A Few Questions I Am Often Asked

What kinds of community events do you host?

Donation-based and low-cost gatherings at the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona, including sound meditations, drum circles, and conscious conversation events. Upcoming dates are on the events page

Do I need to know anyone before I come?

Not at all. Many people arrive on their own. A shared activity gives the evening somewhere to begin, and there is room to take part at whatever pace feels comfortable.

Why does community matter so much to you?

Because people need places where connection is possible, and connection is tied to health. The U.S. Surgeon Generalhas called social connection a public health priority. I have seen what a welcoming room can do, and I want more of those rooms to exist.
