Making Room for Rest With Sound

It can be difficult to settle down when there is still so much on our minds. I think that is part of the appeal of a sound meditation. There is time set aside to listen, and there is no conversation to keep up with while the sound is playing.

When I think about sound and vibrational work, I come back to the experience of listening. A tone can hold our attention in a different way than words do, and the spaces between the tones can be part of that experience too. I am interested in what becomes noticeable when we give ourselves that kind of time.

I also think it matters to leave room for different responses. A person may feel rested, distracted, emotional, or very little at all. I would not want anyone to feel that there is a correct experience to have, or that feeling relaxed is another task to complete.

My understanding of this work includes respect for those differences. Sound meditation is an opportunity to pause, and it does not need a promise attached to it. It is not a replacement for medical or mental health care.

As I reflect on this, I wonder how often we make room for rest without expecting it to produce something. That is a question I want to keep exploring in my work with sound.

A Few Questions I Am Often Asked

What happens during a sound meditation?

You lie back, get comfortable, and listen while singing bowls and other instruments play. There is no conversation to keep up with and nothing you need to do. Every response is welcome, whether you feel rested, distracted, emotional, or very little at all.

Do I need experience with meditation to join?

None at all. You simply listen. There is no right way to have the experience, and no result you are expected to produce.

Where do sound meditations happen in Phoenix?

Group sound meditations are held at the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona, and I also offer private sound sessions there. You can see upcoming gatherings on the events page, or call or text me at 623-986-3987.
