How I Prepare the Room for a Sound Session

Long before anyone arrives for a sound session, I am already at work. Preparing the room is its own quiet ritual, and I want to tell you about it.

First comes the space itself. Blankets clean and fresh. Lights softened. Essential oils. The ordinary clutter of the day cleared away, so the room can say, without words, that something different happens here.

Then the instruments. I set out the bowls and the gong and spend a few minutes with each one. Every bowl gets struck once and heard. It is part tuning and part greeting, and it settles me as much as it settles the room.

Finally, there is a pause before the doors open. I stand in the middle of the ready room and take a breath. Whatever I carry into the space, the person will feel, so I make sure what I carry is calm.

As I reflect on it, the preparation is already part of the session. Care put into a room becomes care people feel. That is what I want waiting for you at every sound meditation.

What should I expect when I walk in?

You will be welcomed, shown where to settle in, and given time to arrive before the sound begins.

Is sound meditation the same as meditation?

It is one friendly form of it. The sound gives your attention a place to rest, which many people find easier than silence. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health offers a helpful overview of meditation in its many forms.

Where and when do group sound meditations happen?

At the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona. Upcoming dates are always on my events page.
