What I Have Learned From Hosting

Hosting has been one of my greatest teachers. Every gathering hands me a small lesson about people, and over time those lessons have added up.

The first lesson is that people want to be welcomed more than they want to be impressed. Fancy is forgettable. Feeling expected and wanted is what people remember.

The second lesson is that something always goes differently than planned, and it is usually fine. The food runs late, the playlist stops, the weather refuses to cooperate. Guests remember how the room felt, not whether the schedule held.

The third lesson is that the host sets the emotional temperature. If I am rushed and anxious, the room feels it. If I am settled and glad to see people, the room feels that too. Hosting asks me to practice what I want the evening to feel like.

As I reflect on all of it, hosting keeps me honest and keeps me humble. I am grateful for every person who has walked through the door and taught me something. You can see what is coming up on my events page.

How can I find out about upcoming gatherings?

Everything I host is listed on my events page, with dates, times, and what to expect. Most gatherings are held at the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona.

Do I need to know anyone to come?

Not at all. Plenty of guests arrive knowing nobody, and the evenings are shaped so that strangers stop feeling like strangers quickly. Come exactly as you are.

Why do you put so much care into hosting?

Because gathering matters for our health, and the research agrees. The U.S. Surgeon General has called social connection a public health priority, and I have seen why, one welcoming room at a time.
