Showing Up Is Enough
I want to say something to the person who almost came to an event and talked themselves out of it. I know that person well, because some days I am that person.
The evening arrives, energy is low, and the couch makes a compelling argument. We tell ourselves we will go to the next one, when we are more rested, more interesting, more something. The next one comes, and the same argument returns.
Here is what I have seen from the hosting side. The people who come tired are glad they came. The ones who arrive nervous relax within minutes. Nobody has ever needed to be impressive at one of my gatherings. Presence was always the whole requirement.
You do not owe a room your best self. Bring the self you have that day. Community is not built by people at their finest. It is built by people who keep showing up as they are.
As I reflect on it, showing up is a quiet kind of courage, and it counts. Whenever you are ready, there is a seat for you at my community events.
What if I can only stay for part of an event?
Come for what you can. An honest hour counts, and you are welcome to arrive late or leave early. Some connection is always better than another evening alone with the couch.
What are your gatherings like?
Warm, low pressure, and welcoming, held at the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona. There is no agenda to perform and nothing to prepare. Dates are on my events page.
Why does just showing up matter?
Because belonging is built from repeated ordinary contact, not grand gestures. The U.S. Surgeon General has called attention to how deeply social connection affects our health, and every appearance in the room is a thread in that fabric.
