The First Few Minutes of a Sound Session

People ask me what a sound session feels like, and I usually start with the first few minutes, because that is where the shift happens.

You arrive carrying your day. The traffic, the inbox, the conversation that did not go well. We talk first about what is on your mind, and then you get comfortable while the room grows still.

The first tones are almost always met with a busy mind. That is normal. Thoughts arrive, and the sound gives them somewhere to go. Within a few minutes, most people's breathing changes on its own. Nobody tells it to.

I love watching that handover, when the day loosens its grip and the sound takes over the job of holding your attention. It is the moment the session really begins, and it never gets old for me.

As I reflect on it, those first minutes teach the whole philosophy. You do not have to earn rest or perform relaxation. You just have to arrive. Everything after that is my job, and the bowls'.

What happens when I arrive for a sound session?

We talk for a few minutes about what you need, then you lie back and get comfortable while the bowls and other instruments play. Sessions are 90 minutes at the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona.

What if my mind will not settle?

That is completely normal, especially at the beginning. The sound gives your attention somewhere gentle to rest, and settling usually happens on its own. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that a wandering mind is part of meditation, not a failure at it.

What should I wear or bring?

Comfortable clothes are all you need. Blankets, bolsters, and everything else are provided. Details are on my private sessions page.
