Change Usually Starts Smaller Than We Expect

When people tell me they want to change something, they often apologize for how small their first step sounds. I want to take that apology away. Small is usually exactly where change begins.

Big declarations feel good in the moment. They rarely survive a hard week. A small step, repeated, does something gentler and more durable. It builds evidence that you are a person who follows through.

I think we underestimate how much our days are built from tiny choices. What we reach for when we are tired. What we say yes to. What we let ourselves put off. Change that lasts tends to live in those small places rather than in dramatic overhauls.

In coaching conversations, we spend time finding the step that is almost embarrassingly easy, because easy is what actually happens. Momentum matters more than heroics. Once the first small thing moves, the next one gets lighter.

As I reflect on this, I think about how often we dismiss our own progress because it looks ordinary. Ordinary progress is still progress. It deserves to count.

How do I start changing something when I feel stuck?

Start smaller than feels meaningful. Pick one action so easy you almost cannot fail, and repeat it until it asks no effort of you. A coach can help you find that step and stay honest with it.

Does coaching really help people change?

Coaching works best as a structured partnership with accountability built in. The International Coaching Federation's research portal collects studies on coaching outcomes if you would like to see the evidence for yourself.

Can you help me build better habits?

Habit change is one of the most common things people bring to my coaching sessions. Sessions are virtual, one hour each, and I work with people in Phoenix, Arizona and anywhere else.
