Belonging Takes Time

I think belonging is one of those words that can sound simple until we try to describe what it means. Being recognized, feeling welcome, and knowing there is room to participate may all be part of it, and the balance can be different for each person.

Community buildinginterests me because those experiences develop between people. Familiarity can grow through repeated contact, but attendance alone does not tell the whole story. The quality of the welcome and the way people treat one another matter too.

I want to leave room for belonging to develop at different speeds. One person may feel comfortable quickly, while another may need several visits or a smaller setting. I do not think there is a useful timetable for feeling connected.

There is also room for a gathering to be enjoyable without becoming a person's main community. People have different interests and needs, and a welcoming space can respect that without asking for a larger commitment.

As I reflect on belonging, I am interested in the small choices that make people feel considered. Remembering a name, allowing time for an answer, and making room for a different point of view can all be part of that conversation.

A Few Questions I Am Often Asked

How long does it take to feel like you belong?

There is no timetable. Some people feel comfortable on a first visit, and others need a few gatherings or a smaller setting. Both are normal, and you are welcome either way.

What if I come once and never return?

That is fine. A gathering can be enjoyable without becoming your main community. You are welcome for one evening or for many, and no one will ask you for a larger commitment.

Where do your community gatherings happen?

At the Empower House Community Gathering Space in North Phoenix, Arizona. Most are donation-based or low-cost, and upcoming dates are on the events page And because belonging is also about health, the U.S. Surgeon General's work on social connectionis worth a read.
